I did try that, good for computers, clearly not as effective on bikes!

1st- check fuses
2nd- check wires voltage, if it is from 11 to 13v
3rd- open the fucker, see if there is nothing black in the big pieces

If none of these are unnormal u are screwed! You may need a new speedo. I am using one new too.

 

Sounds like a loose connection to me but I no sod all about bikes I would wait for Killachipmunk or vtwin2stroke to see what they think

 

As Jorge said, check the fuses under your seat and make sure none are blown, but before you start follow the other steps and start pulling things apart, check the huge plug on the back of the dash. If the entire thing is going out at once, I'd guess that the plug's probably just come loose. You can get at it under the nose if you get your arm in there right, just try pushing it back on.
On my bike the rubber boot that sits on it had come off over time, if yours is the same and the connector's definitely fully in, it could well have some water in there, in which case pull the plug, have a look in the connector for water and give it a quick WD40

That's where I'd start!
