100w Xenon H7 Bulbs - Is This Okay?

4940 Views 16 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Dale
I am looking to put some 100w headlight bulbs on my bike, whereas the standard wattage is 55w.

Will putting 100w bulbs in do any damage or cause problems?

Needing an auto-electrician's or a super geeks answer right now. Haha.

Cheers.

i dont know if it would work or not , but i think it may blow the fuse or bulb, the haynes manual says 55 watt so i would recommend not going any higher.

how much did the xenon lights cost you , as there not cheap bulbs??

Xenon bulbs are cheap! 100w or 55w. Even blue tint ones.

All less than a fiver a pair.

aaaa i did not know lol , as i wanna get a pair of blue tinted ones for my blue baby :D , but yer i would say just use 55 watt to be safe.
Yeah, you can push the wattage up some, but near double is way too high... the standard bulbs are pushing close to 5 amps, and this setup would be over 8... Heat loss in the wires goes up exponentially with current, so you may end up with some very hot cable, which could do anything.

Stick to the reccommended Wattage I'd say, be safe.

agreed
Xenon bulbs? As in HID ?
Because if so, you can't just stick the bulbs in. You need to put in the Ballast as well which is generally the bit that costs more.

Or do you just mean high wattage bulbs? (not actual Xenon).
Mine is a 100w, had it for a year no problems :)
Nah dont do it, 100W will generate S*** loads of heat and will end up melting your plastic cover for our headlights. I was doing 200A readings otherday, and the cable I used to test went scorching hot within 10 seconds. So imagine say 10A 100W bulbs on constantly... :) Simples!

55w Xenons are supposedly really good anyway?

Be good for winter when you have ice on your head lights
The current draw from those bulbs could melt a wire and cause a short in your loom somewhere. Your better off getting something like an Osram Nightbreaker bulb they are legal and provide much better light.
I've got them bulbs 100whatt and they are fine
firstly 100w blue tint or 55watt blue tint are not xenon's/hids. They are infact just normal bulbs and produce more white light.. dont expect crystal clear white light you wont get it from these bulbs. However saying that people have said there are some bulbs that produce pure white light e.g what TheXTguy recommended but they cost about £30plus. You can pick up a hid kit for that price on ebay. I recently took out my hids when turning bike back to stock ( SS Scorpion for sale people lol). So put standard bulb back in and I didnt like the yellow light next to my ice white sidelights so i bought some 100watt bulbs/ and they light up the road well and look whiter (but not fully pure) i have had no issues. however in some bikes the extra watts current can melt wiring. R125 seems to hold it well
The regulations DO state a minimum wattage (15W for up to 250cc, 24W for larger engines) but fail to mention a maximum. However for any vehicle made after 1977 the lights must be E marked - I suspect the maximum power of the marked ones will be 55W.
